Notes from the sketchbook 📝: "Nestled amongst the shelter of the dark Gneiss rock, the water beckons, glowing blue and gold. I am drawn to the pyramid rock, punctuating the water like an arrow in the landscape, pointing me forward. It is not so much a whisper, but a clear voice booming: the water calls beyond, held within the land like a refilling cup."

I am interested in how the initial plein air sketch lies beneath this piece, allowing colours from the land to be translated directly into rich tones. Back in the studio, these initial colours are burning and revealed.

I want to leave a certain amount of the piece unravelled, where the rocks were lost and found through observation. In the land, the painting said one thing; in the photographs and films I used back in the studio, it told a different tale.

I like the tensions of finding something between what was there, what was discovered, and what is subsequently remembered.

This summer feels like a turning point in my work.

I have always made small watercolour sketches and quick drawings on site, alongside photographs and films of the places I swim, using all of these as ways of gathering information for the work. But this summer I have consciously spent more time working plein air — feeling the landscape and fully immersing myself in it, before and after the swims, to gather more information through looking, observing and being there.

This has felt really important to the work.

The only trouble is that when I return to the studio to finish the paintings, I find myself torn between what was there and what is remembered. For me, this is where the interesting part of the work happens — within that tension.

I’m not really interested in creating accurate paintings as much as I am interested in creating work that feels like the place: the cool air, wet conditions, luminous water, soft sun, and the particular atmosphere of being there.

But I am also trying to be rigorous afterwards. Does the painting actually achieve that feeling? Does it hold something of the experience? I’m trying not to get too caught up in whether something simply looks nice, or whether a particular section is a great passage of painting. Those things can be seductive, but they are less important to me than whether the work as a whole manages to FEEL like the place.

The paintings sit somewhere between observation and memory, between what I experienced in the landscape and what remains afterwards. And it is within that space that I’m most interested in working.

Throughout the summer, up on the Isle of Mull, I made a series of plein air pieces. I often make watercolour sketches and small drawings, but this year I set myself the challenge of working on larger sketches over more extended periods of time. The pieces became loose, energetic and immediate.

'Gneiss Head Return' is one of those paintings that started on the island and was then reworked in the studio.

It is a spot that is a favourite for swimming — nestled amongst giant rocks, with the perfect secluded place to change before slipping into the water. The turquoise sea is striking against the dark, almost black, giants surrounding it.

I painted this place once before, in 2022, from a different angle, and I was keen to see how the same location might be interpreted differently now. The original 'Gneiss Head' was made largely from memory, with forms softened into their edges. The view looked back towards land from the sea and, at the time, I didn’t own a waterproof camera, so the work grew from drawings made directly after swimming.

This year, with more time and more direct sketches to work from, the painting feels more solid. Still, the blues and greens feature heavily. The colours only seem surreal until I look back at the photographs and film — then it becomes clear just how overwhelming the blue is, both in colour and atmosphere. 💙

It has been interesting to look backwards and forwards through my work over the last five years and begin connecting threads of intention — noticing which ideas dominate at different times.

In 2022, I was particularly interested in capturing the essence of a space, largely through memory and repeated actions. This year, I have been more focused on true representation — not to be confused with accuracy — collecting as much source imagery as possible before painting from digital drawings.

I think there is always a tension in my work between rupturing what is known and trying to create something that feels balanced.

Perhaps now I want to think more about how memory holds the work — and how it disrupts it.

Back in September 2024, @pretendlovers made a beautiful film about my practice, which was shown alongside my solo show at @thealchemyexperiment.

We’d been talking about the film for a while and decided to take a trip out to my local loch, where I swam and sketched and they filmed. Later, they visited my studio to film me making a larger piece inspired by the same loch.

It was wonderful to see them in action. I also made a small thank you for them, which somehow got left in my studio for over a year. When I recently rediscovered it, it felt so good to finally get it to them and properly say thank you!

There’s something about spending longer in a place — swimming in it, sketching it, observing it — that allows the work to develop in a deeper way.

It's always so special to receive photos from a client showing a painting they've chosen in its new home.

'Dew' was the first painting I made in 2026, inspired by the softness of the morning hills, with water winding through the landscape like a mirror to the sky. Seeing it settled into this beautiful space is such a joy.

I also love seeing my work alongside that of another artist. Here, 'Dew' is paired with the beautiful birch ceramic pots by @sonyawilkinsceramics, and I think they complement each other so naturally.

After the summer we've been having, it's hard to imagine frozen lochs, snow-capped hills, and the quiet stillness of winter.

These beautiful photographs were taken by the incredibly talented @alicepoole__ back in February, when we spent a day at Loch Lomond sketching, swimming, making photographs, and sharing conversations about creativity and creative living. It was a real joy to be part of her project.

I've just returned from painting on the Isle of Mull, where the colours were so vivid they felt worlds away from these muted winter tones. The smooth, steel-grey water and blanket-soft skies seemed to muffle every sound, creating such a peaceful atmosphere.

It's a beautiful reminder that every season has its own palette, its own mood, and its own kind of magic. ✨

The west coast — white sand so bright it almost glows,
set against storm-heavy skies rolling in from the Atlantic.

Lush green hills soaking up soft, damp sunshine,
everything looking a little more alive than it should.

Islands scattered along the shore like they were dropped there by accident.

A caramel wafer after a long hike —
simple, perfect, earned.

And that water…
clear, glassy, unreal. Like it doesn’t belong here at all.

Created for @g20collective_artists exhibition: SECRETS AND LAYERS at @thesocialhub.glasgow . Where 12 artists were asked to explore Trongate and the surrounding area.

This painting began with my fascination for the Molendinar Burn, a largely forgotten river that is deeply connected to Glasgow's origins and Saint Mungo's sixth-century settlement. Although it once shaped the city's identity, much of the burn now flows culverted beneath streets, buildings and centuries of urban development.

While researching the river's history, I was drawn to J.M.W. Turner's 1834 sketch "Glasgow Cathedral and the Bridge of Sighs, from Molendinar Burn", along with historical maps, archival photographs and my own sketches made on site. I became interested in how traces of the burn still linger within the city, despite being concealed from view.

Focusing on Molendinar Street at the end of the Trongate, I imagined the burn resurfacing within present-day Glasgow. Inspired by Romantic landscape traditions, I combined fragments of past and present to explore ideas of erosion, concealment and urban change.

For me, this work is about the layers that exist beneath the city we see today—natural landscapes, histories and memories that continue to shape Glasgow, even when they are hidden from sight.

I’m delighted to be showing a large new collection of paintings as the featured artist of The Glasgow Gallery's newest exhibition: 'The Edge of the Known'.

This new body of work explores the relationship between land and water — finding points of contact, lingering thresholds, and the ever-changing light of the Scottish landscape. These paintings have grown from time spent swimming in and observing shifting weather, remote glens, river paths and coastlines, and trying to capture that sense of movement within the land itself.

The exhibition opens this Saturday, and I’d love for you to come along. There will also be a meet & greet on Saturday 30th May from 11am–1pm — please come and say hi!

Another reluctant spin reveal, because apparently the algorithm enjoys a reel, a face, and a dramatic turn.

This painting came together in the midst of winter hill walks — moving through undulating slopes, following the pull of water as it carved its own path through the landscape. "Cascade" grew from that sense of movement: of being guided, carried, and gathered by the land itself.
