Beside the loch, the wind flapped the paper, the watercolours dribbled and raced, escaping the page.
My eye kept returning to the fold of the hill, zooming into its crevices — maybe because I was seeking shelter from the hostile wind myself.
The water was so ruffled that the usual glass-like reflections disappeared, each page stopped by an abrupt line.

“Onto the mossy mound, reaching forward and nestled there like a white 💎—a jewel in the distance—I see the salvation of my thirst. Gasping for a drop to soothe my papery throat and lift my heavy limbs. Led only by the rigor of my endeavors, I run, feeling the rhythm of my own weight pounding against the landscape, plodding and whirring. Though I dent the soft peated soil, from here I see the vastness. Me, simply antlike, crossing tiny paths along the giant’s contoured spine.”

I took dance back up, moved my body through running, and kept swimming (even when I didn’t feel like it). Gave space for myself by continuously filling my creative cup.
I spent time with the G20 artist collective, gathering ideas and learning from community.
I started playing football—completely out of my comfort zone.
And new opportunities showed up because I kept showing up for my practice.

*Mauve Loch* looks across the Kilpatrick Hills, following the long undulations of land as they rise and fall toward a quiet basin of water. The painting grew from time spent moving through this terrain, where cooler light settles over the heather and the land softens into mauve, slate, and silvery greens. The loch appears almost held within the folds of the hills — a pause in the rhythm of the ground.

In my sketchbook I wrote: “the hills lean inward; colour cools and thins, and water gathers the sky.” That thought stayed with me — the sense of the landscape breathing, of distance and depth dissolving into reflection. The mauve tones drift across the surface like weather passing slowly through, blurring edges and quietening the space.

Moving through places like this anchors the work. The land reveals itself in layers: heather muted by cloud, water catching light, contours slipping into one another. These moments seep in as colour and line, becoming the fluid forms and subdued glow shaping this painting.

A little hello from me — and my very cold, slightly purple hands — in the home studio! ❄️🎨
Here’s a peek behind the scenes as I’ve been working away on a very large new collection of paintings. Over the past six months I’ve spent hundreds of hours layering, adjusting, reworking, and nudging these pieces into place — a real dance of pushing and pulling.

I came across a line recently that said the final 5% of a painting is always the hardest. It rang especially true after chatting with fellow artists at the opening of @glasgowgallery’s “Small but Mighty” show on Saturday. We found ourselves deep in conversation about that elusive moment when a piece finally feels complete. For me it’s always a combination of visual balance and a quiet emotional click — that sense that the atmosphere is right. Sometimes an image looks strong but the feeling isn’t: too sharp, too graphic, too hazy… just off in a way I can’t ignore.

What I’m forever chasing is that soft space between nostalgia and a fleeting moment of magic — a split second that feels both familiar and unreal. Not much to ask for, I know! ✨

⛰ Having a moment for these hills! Walking into the water felt like stepping straight into a painting — the landscape unfolding in a full tonal symphony around me. From the icy, steel-grey loch to the rich, peat-dark earth… the fiery reds of bracken and fading heather… the soft whites of sheep, snow, and low clouds… all held together by those earthy, mossy greens tough enough to cling to every slope and turn.

It feels important to share the sketches, but equally important to show the photography that feeds them. These images become part of the process — digital influences that shape the final painted work.

Framing matters. The crop, the angle, the decision of what to leave out becomes almost as meaningful as what stays within the frame.

Trying to honour the place, the colours, and the quiet moments in between. 🌿🖤🖌️

⛰ Having a moment for these hills! Walking into the water felt like stepping straight into a painting — the landscape unfolding in a full tonal symphony around me. From the icy, steel-grey loch to the rich, peat-dark earth… the fiery reds of bracken and fading heather… the soft whites of sheep, snow, and low clouds… all held together by those earthy, mossy greens tough enough to cling to every slope and turn.

It feels important to share the sketches, but equally important to show the photography that feeds them. These images become part of the process — digital influences that shape the final painted work.

Framing matters. The crop, the angle, the decision of what to leave out becomes almost as meaningful as what stays within the frame.

Trying to honour the place, the colours, and the quiet moments in between. 🌿🖤🖌️

I’ve been quietly working away in the depths of my cold winter studio again — surviving another season without central heating was never the plan, yet somehow the warmth in these new pieces is keeping me going. Here’s a little sneak preview of a nearly finished work. I’m completely obsessed with this colour palette at the moment…

I expect my usual swim content to resume soon, after two weeks taken out by the plague (some flu-ish Covid variant knocked me out well and good). Feeling hugely relieved to be back running in the hills and soaking up the winter magic again!

The mossy clumps gather around each waterborne pool in an electric green, permeating the mist and soft winter hues. My skin glows red from the shock of cold, and the line of my presence is left behind.

In this new piece, the red line at the pool’s centre traces my swim through the landscape — an otherwise untouched place far from any human presence. The brief glow of my energy transfers back into the water, momentarily warming its icy temperature fed by fresh snowmelt.

Only here do the worries of life in the city below fall away, shrinking into insignificance like the tiny dot it becomes in the distance. The bolt of energy from these surroundings is palpable — a charge that grounds, awakens, and renews.

As the hills melt into the fire of autumn, the water meanders through them, finding and falling with the rhythm of yesterday’s rainfall. It slowly carves and sculpts the earth, making way for the soft rise of light mist vapour.

As you can see from the initial sketch (slide 3), the energy of the piece moves in the direction of the water, drawing the eye through the landscape. My intention for this work was to let the viewer feel the deeply grounding presence of the hills through nature’s rhythm.

Although I know not everyone is inclined to dip into the icy pools as I do, I wanted to capture something of that sensation — a mindful place where the body feels held and grounded by the sounds and subtle movements of the land.

Notes from the sketchbook:
As I dawdle down and around the next statue-like boulder, my eyes are met with the most piercing blue — an electric, magnetic pull toward the water. Not the first or second pull of the day, but the third. I swear I hear a calling, as if I must be bathed again.

I recently read about Iona being a metaphorically thin place, where the veil between the physical world and heaven is permeable. Not being a religious person myself, I questioned this — yet this part of the Hebrides holds a particular pull, a transient kind of beauty. I keep thinking about how fleeting that pull feels, how it’s caught in memory. There’s a hint of melancholy in these works as I search to find those moments again, always dissipating into memory and loss.

This piece moved through many forms: an initial watercolour sketch, then drawing, then painting over more than 15 layers. I built it in stages, pushing and pulling the image away from myself. The line near the top is symbolic of that touching horizon — a kind of magical portal to “heaven,” or perhaps just a reminder of the swim, and the search for something inside myself.

“I walk along the headland, up and down through the undulating paths, following the black stone and the leaching tides. Nestled into the soft green mount is the whitest sand, made from bleached coral carried in by the sea — a hint of magic. I’m relieved it’s still there. I didn’t dream it after all. It’s where I remember, yet now that I’m away, it still feels unreal.”
This painting is my attempt to capture that hidden gem — something that feels almost too good to be true. Even on the dreichest day, the sand holds its eternal glow. To swim in these waters is like stepping into a dream; the turquoise becomes impossibly vivid against the white coral shore. I wanted that surreal brightness, that amplified colour, to come through in the work.

The dissipated edges in the painting echo that dreamlike state — the way a place can feel hard to solidify once you’re no longer there, always slipping and falling away inside memory. The colours stay bright, but the form becomes uncertain, just like the way we remember landscapes we love.

This past year I’ve been gently challenging my body — exploring its strength, resilience, and joy.

I’ve always loved swimming, and people often ask if I dread the winter. Honestly, I prefer it (apart from the loss of light). The bracken dies back, the world quiets, and hidden spots like this one reappear. The water feels sharper, fresher — more alive.

Last week I stepped out of my comfort zone twice: I joined a contemporary dance class and played my first ever women’s football match! Dance was once a big part of my life, so returning to movement felt grounding and familiar. Football, though, is completely new — inspired by both my daughters (& partner’s) love of the sport. And to my surprise, I loved it.

After the last 13 years of motherhood, much of my energy has gone into others. Now, I’m learning to rediscover and redefine parts of myself — through movement, art, and connection.

Here’s to strength, curiosity, and the bodies that carry us through it all. 💧⚽🩰

One of six new small paintings shaped by time spent running through the hills. As the darker mornings roll in, my early wild swims have become fewer—but not gone. I now carve out time for afternoon dips, and trail running has become the perfect partner to these cold water moments.

I’ve always run, but only recently have I found joy in the trails—covering more ground, reaching tucked-away lochs, moving with the land instead of against it (most of the time). This series explores those moments of motion, stillness, and seasonal shift.

My favourite red oxide has made its annual return—fiery, grounding, and entirely at home in this palette.

From the very first sketch, I had a feeling this piece would flow more easily than others. There’s something endlessly magnetic about this view — the horizon stretching beyond sight, the quiet rhythm between land and sea.

I usually hold back on bold colour, but the deep greens, soft whites, and rich turquoise here felt too compelling to resist. Scotland often wears a muted palette under grey skies, but beneath that dreich exterior is a vibrant, fertile land — especially poignant in our warming climate.

Sharing this piece comes with hesitation (as always) — knowing when a work is truly finished is never easy. But I hope it resonates. 🌿

Always a treat to drop off new work at @velveteasel298 for their upcoming winter show — especially when it means escaping a dull M8 drive and diving straight into the sea!

Part of the same collection as Iona Tide, this piece explores a softer palette — pale skies, diluted coral tones, and the gentle contrast between sea and shore.

The red-pink granite and muted grasses of Iona leave such a distinct mark — one that I keep returning to in the studio. This painting began with fluid, gestural sketches that allowed the rhythm of tide and stone to shape the composition.

A special commission for two truly special friends 💛

This piece was created for a couple I hold very dear — the bride and I have known each other since the day we were born, and this place has been a part of every summer (bar Covid) we’ve shared since.

Choosing a viewpoint to paint was no easy task — this stretch of coastline is full of beloved little bays, each with its own memories. I eventually settled on this view because it looks out toward one of our favourite secluded white-sand beaches — a spot you can reach either by clambering along the cliffs or kayaking through the bays. It's the perfect place for a sandy picnic, a game of "rat ball", or more recently... a competitive round of spikeball.

While painting, I thought a lot about what it means to choose someone, to build a life together. And so this perspective — one that looks out far into the distance, into the mystery and beauty of what lies ahead — felt like the right fit. A view for love, for adventure, and for a shared future.
